National Grid wins a place on top employers for working families list

The first ever list of top employers for working families was published today and National Grid’s name is on the list.

The list of employers that do the most to support working parents and carers has been pulled together by work-life balance charity Working Families as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations.

Working Families describes the organisations on the list as the best of the best – those ‘whose initiative and example has made positive change happen for working families’. Those who have made it onto the list have shown expertise in areas such as flexible working, childcare provision, maternity/paternity policy and help with caring responsibilities.

Jon Carlton, Director of UK Shared Services, says: “National Grid’s inclusion in this list is very encouraging for me, as exec sponsor of our Families@work group. It’s recognition for how the company is taking a more pro-active and enlightened approach to balancing the demands of work and families. It also recognises how a growing number of employees are bringing their ideas and talents to the fore in challenging the art of the possible and providing support to one another.”

National Grid has won its place on the list through its expertise in flexible working – the company is seen as a leader in the utility sector and the Inclusion and Diversity team is often asked to give other organisations advice.

The submission was put together by Inclusion and Diversity Manager Catherine Hamilton with help from the support group Families @ Work in March. Having made the long list, she was then telephone interviewed by an independent judge.
